Ideas for ways to apply your theory

In the comments below, write about 3 of the theories/traditions/styles that you would apply. Be sure to explain why you find them to be so intriguing.

  1. 1. Elizabethan/Victorian: I've never dived into this theory, especially not for a Shakespearean text, so I want to better understand how such a script would be performed in that time.
    2. Musicals (Broadway style): These are very over the top, very dramatic and such, so I want to see how I can take a serious, older text from R&J and repurpose it into a modern musical people would watch.
    3. Immersive theatre: I love this kind of theatre, especially when I explored it more for the DN, and with a text as personal and emotional as R&J, I want to explore how I can entice the audience more through such a close-up (immersive) approach.

  2. I starred Peter Brooke because I really liked the design of it and the whimsicalness of the scene that Rosanne directed, I think that would be really interesting to experiment with because of the Shakespeare aspect. I also starred Gecko and Frantic Assembly because of their movement, but this might be hard for our situation.

  3. 1) Commedia because I like the idea of applying stock characters to amplify the power dynamic this scene is portraying and these characters are representing-- Juliet, the namorata who's only concern is love as she indulges in her luxurious life. And the Maid, the lowly servant who despite her personal priorities, must always place her loyalties and maintain a sense of servitude to her master.

    2) Since this scene is written by Brecht, I think its important to amplify his ideas by using some of his techniques and I think it'd be cool to use Brecht to connect the issues addressed in the script to modern-day life.

    3) Puppetry is super interesting to also depict a story, I think we can also use it in the same way as commedia to create these stock characters. Also we can do continuity with the story in an interesting way if we have a continues shadow puppetry going in the background or something...

  4. Spymonkey: I would like to explore their use of physicality for a comedic effect. And since both scenes have a conflict of desires, I think we could emphasize that with maybe some slapstick.

Commedia dell'Arte: Similar to Spymonkey, I would like to give the scene a more comedic and dramatic look. Besides, the stock characters from Commedia can really help bring out the power dynamic.

Katie Mitchell: I believe using Katie Mitchell as an inspiration would allow us to really adapt to this online platform, using camera angles, sounds and other technical elements.
