We watched about 12:00 minutes...I would encourage you to watch until around 18:30. (The rest is an actual performance.)

This video is great for understanding how the puppeteer commands the puppet.

Homework Reminder -- Due by 8:00 on Friday

2) 3 Research Questions that you can demonstrate

3) 2-3 Sources (include source analysis--is it reliable? trustworthy? Why or why not?)

  1. 1) Reaction to the style: I think it's a very beautiful and intricate tradition. I loved all the details with the puppets.

    2) 3 Research Questions that you can demonstrate
Are there heads and costumes that are more commonly used
How do the puppeteers control the puppets?
What is the head making process?

  2. 1) I appreciated the art form and was more interested in it after we tried it! I think it would be very interesting to see one of these shows(I actually plan on doing so when I visit my family who are moving to Japan).
    2) What is the process which the head puppeteer executes with the puppet prior to the show?
How does the narrator in Bunraku make vocal distinctions between each character?
How does the shamisen accompaniment contribute to the Bunraku performance?
3)http://japansocietyny.blogspot.com.br/2014/11/three-string-theory-japans-shamisen.html This blogpost talks about he components and history of the shamisen instrument. This source is beneficial in that it explains basic concepts, however the source may not be the most reliable as the blog is publicly produced (as opposed to an academic institution) which reduces its credibility.
The book, Playing Culture: Conventions and Extensions of Performance edited by Vicki Ann Cremona, Rikard Hoogland, Gay Morris, Willmar Sauter, contains information about Bunraku and the role of the narrator. The source is reliable, however the book does not just contain information about Bunraku. Therefore, very specific and deep information might not be found

  3. 1) While watching the video I was really interested in the puppetry used in this style of theatre, especially when considering that this aspect is quite traditional and symbolic. Additionally, I also learned that there are approximately 20 types of heads for the puppets used in different performances and each head is customized to an individual role by changing the makeup and hairstyle.

    2) How is the process for casting the puppets for the performance?
How is the blocking of the characters created?
When does a puppeteere is allowed to move the head of the puppet?

    3) In order to learn more about the puppets and especially about their different heads and the traditions behind it, I searched a few sources such as: http://www2.ntj.jac.go.jp/unesco/bunraku/en/doll/index.html and https://www.japan-zone.com/culture/bunraku.shtml. However, I encountered a few limitations such as, the fact that each source reveal slighltly different datas (numbers of heads existent for puppet and the creation of the thatre style)
Additionally, I also used this source: http://www.glopad.org/jparc/?q=en/adachi/performers_narrator. So that I could understand better the role of the narrator during the performance.

  4. 1) Reaction to the style

I was impressed how the puppet's face could be expressed totally different depending on how they pose their heads. Also, it was interesting that they put a pin on a mouth of female puppet.

    2) 3 Research Questions that you can demonstrate

How is the process for creating the puppet costume?
How do the puppeteers train themselves in order to perform the best?
How are the puppets preserved to be maintained with the best condition?

  5. Reaction:
I thought this type of japanese theater was very intriguing. Normally when I see puppet plays they puppeteer tends to be completely dressed in black so that the focus will go entirely to the puppet itself. However, on bunraku there are three puppeteers, and one who does not wear any type of mask, and I thought it was really interesting.

    Research Questions:
    1. Is there any sort of connection between the main puppeteer and the puppet in the way that the head is considered to have a spiritual connection?
    2. Why do the plays have to last about a day?
    3. Why is the narrator the only one to speak in it at all?
